Step-by-Step Process (Private Sale)

  1. Agree on purchase price and collect the title — Ensure the seller signs the back of the title, fills in your name as buyer, and completes the odometer disclosure.
  2. Get NJ auto insurance — You must have valid NJ coverage before you can register. Call your insurer to add the vehicle to your policy.
  3. Schedule an MVC appointment — Visit mymvc.com. You cannot walk in without an appointment for title/registration services.
  4. Visit the MVC agency — Bring all documents listed above. The clerk will verify everything and issue temporary plates on the spot.
  5. Pay all fees — Title, registration, and any applicable sales tax are due at the appointment.
  6. Receive your registration and plates — Permanent plates and registration card arrive by mail within 7–10 business days.

💡 Tip: NJ MVC appointments fill up fast — especially at high-traffic locations like Edison, Lodi, and Eatontown. Book your appointment as soon as you have a signed title. You can legally drive with dealer plates or temporary permit for 10 days.
